Welcome – I’m Em, and Whimroot is my place for writing and ritual, exploring nature, folklore and more. It’s a small corner where I gather things that feel rooted, curious and quietly magical.

I’m your writer, maker, lore-keeper, wanderer and grove warden based in Gloucestershire near the Welsh border.

I’ve always been drawn to old stories, the fantastical and magical; wild places and the myths/folklore that shape them. I’ve spent the last two decades quietly, and at times inconsistently, exploring these themes, but I’ve always returned to nature and the written word. In between all of my unfinished projects, of which there have been many!

Whimroot is where I share essays, life updates, folklore notes, creative projects, Etsy shop updates and whatever tickles my fancy on a Thursday afternoon. Everything here is shaped by my values: gentleness, curiosity, ecological respect and being firmly rooted in the belief that small things can hold deep meaning.

Where the Path began

I’m drawn to folklore, writing and quiet magic and was always encouraged to dive deeply into my imagination as a child. Because of this, and to the annoyance of my teachers, I lived in a realm of pure fantasy; fuelled by camping trips, adventure books, Pokémon and video games, I ran wild in the great vast green of my mind.
As an adult, navigating relationships (both good and bad), work-life balances that never really worked out, agorophobia and PTSD, poor mental health and some even poorer financial choices, my pride and stubbornness getting in my own way, moving from Wales to London, it seemed I had abandoned all of that which I adored and loved. In 2018, I relocated to Gloucestershire, finally called back to the green embrace of Nature, in a variety of wonderful ways.

How I found my way back to the Green

The biggest catalyst was in early 2018, flat and despondent with existing in the concrete rat race that I’d tricked myself into thinking was the lifestyle for me, when I dipped my toes in Druidry, through the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. It opened up the possibility of bringing together nature and spirituality, which, hilariously, was something I had never even considered.

I’d never put much stock in meditation, but it was in this one particular trance state – sat on my bed in the height of summer with aeroplanes roaring overhead – that I stumbled into my own grove and encountered an entity there. I won’t go into too much detail here, but speaking to some of the community, it seemed it was a manifestation of the Green Man or Cernunnos, and while I personally consider them to be the previous Grove Warden before it was passed to me, or a Nature Guardian of some type, this single encounter formed the foundation of my own spiritual practice. Whimroot is the shape that practice has taken — a place where I can tend the threads of story, nature, and quiet magic in my own way.

Whimroot lets me explore the threads that tug at imagination and memory – the ones that feel half-remembered, half-wild and wholly worth following.

I hope that you’ll find comfort, inspiration, recognition, a spark of curiosity or a sense of belonging here. Maybe even a moment that feels like stepping into a quiet clearing of your own.

If you’d like to say hello, drop a comment, reach out to me through my contact form, or follow my adventures on Instagram. Otherwise, feel free to wander – the grove is always open.
